Andrew McCutchen's fantastic season. Clint Barmes' glove. Travis Snider's leap. They have all been nominated for 2012 Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards, which are being voted upon by fans at MLB.com and will be presented on Dec. 4 during baseball's annual Winter Meetings. The GIBBY Awards hence comprise the postscript to baseball's awards season, which has already featured members of the Pirates. McCutchen, freshly announced on Wednesday as a finalist for the National League MVP Award, is off to a great start with three awards. Two of them recognized the center fielder's defense -- the Gold Glove and selection by Wilson as the Pirates' top defensive player -- while the Players Choice Award as NL Outstanding Player saluted his overall game. Now it's time for McCutchen's stellar 2012 season to be recognized. In addition to his great play on defense, he produced 31 homers, 96 RBIs and a league-leading 194 hits, and now is one of the nominees for the MLB MVP GIBBY, a new award honoring baseball's top star. McCutchen has also been nominated for Best Hitter. Unlike other awards along league lines, GIBBYs are Major League awards, hence McCutchen's MVP competition includes American League Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout. McCutchen is joined in the GIBBY spotlight by Barmes, nominated for Top Defensive Player, and Snider, up for Play of the Year. Major League Baseball's A-listers will take home 2012 GIBBYs trophies -- the ultimate honors of baseball's awards season -- based on votes by you the fans at MLB.com, media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni and the Society for American Baseball Research. This year's GIBBY Awards feature nominees in 21 categories. Individual honors will go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason performer. GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic and postseason moment, from MLB.com's Must C highlight reels. In the past four years, you the fans have cast more than 40 million votes across the various GIBBYs categories, none of which were restricted to individual League affiliation. You can vote as many times as you want until fan balloting closes Sunday, Dec. 2, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Winners will be presented their GIBBY trophies at the MLB.com Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards extravaganza during the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Barmes, the steady shortstop whose play contributed to the outstanding pitching that had the Bucs in playoff contention well into September, earned his nomination through his season-long body of work. Snider, on the other hand, planted his flag on the GIBBY map in one memorable instant: The Sept. 27 moment when he scaled Citi Field's right-field fence to rob the Mets' Mike Baxter of a home run. With that theft, Snider instantly crashed everybody's list of the season's top web gems. If last impressions are most enduring, his jaw-dropping play in the season's final week could make him a frontrunner for this GIBBY.
