Yelich heading back to Futures Game next month
Marlins' top prospect currently on disabled list with strained abdominal muscle
MIAMI -- It's "Back to the Futures" for Marlins prospect Christian Yelich.
The left-handed-hitting Double-A Jacksonville Suns outfielder has been selected to represent the Marlins at the Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game on July 14 for the second consecutive year.
The 21-year-old is rated as the Marlins' top prospect according MLB.com. He opened the season ranked second behind right-hander Jose Fernandez, who made Miami's Opening Day roster and is a candidate to be an All-Star as a rookie.
A year ago, when he was at Class A Jupiter, Yelich also played for the United States Team, which faces prospects from the World Team, at the Futures Game.
The 15th annual Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game takes place at 2 p.m. ET on All-Star Sunday at Citi Field in New York and can be seen live on MLB.com, ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD and followed live on MLB.com's Gameday. In addition, XM Radio will broadcast play-by-play coverage of the event live on MLB Network Radio XM 89. MLB.com will also provide complete coverage before, during and after the game. Fans can stay updated by following @MLBFutures on Twitter and can send/receive tweets to/from the U.S. and World Team dugouts during the game by tagging tweets with the hashtags #USDugout and #WorldDugout.
Also, for the first time, fans will determine the final player on the U.S. and World Team rosters by casting their votes in the All-Star Sunday Futures Finalists ballot. There are five candidates for each team, and voting ends on Sunday at 11:59 p.m.
Yelich is regarded as one of the top hitting prospects in the game. The only question about him right now is health.
The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native is currently on the Minor League disabled list with a strained abdominal muscle. He has not been in the lineup for the Suns since June 3.
Yelich is batting .262 with 12 doubles, six triples, six home runs and 28 RBIs for Jacksonville, but his season has been slowed by injuries. He opened the year on the disabled list with a bruised right heel.
Heading to the Futures Game is the latest in a long list of honors for Yelich. He was the Southern Leagues Player of the Week for May 13. In 2012, he attended the Arizona Fall League, where he was named to the AFL Rising Stars team. He also was the Topps Florida State League Player of the Year in '12.
Selected 23rd overall in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, Yelich is a candidate to be called up to the big leagues for the first time. Yelich was on the brink of getting promoted at the time he was placed on the disabled list.
