Josh Donaldson of the Oakland Athletics named the Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month for September
Oakland Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson has been voted the Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month for September. Budweiser, the official beer sponsor of Major League Baseball and sponsor of 23 of 30 clubs, is also the presenting sponsor of the National League Player of the Month Award.
Donaldson batted .337 (30-for-89) with eight doubles, five home runs, 16 RBI and 20 runs scored in 25 games to claim his first career Player of the Month Award and the first for the Athletics since Eric Chavez took home monthly honors in September 2001. Among A.L. leaders with a minimum of 78 plate appearances during the period, the 27-year-old finished third in runs scored, on-base percentage (.449) and slugging percentage (.596), fourth in walks (16), seventh in batting average and tied for 10th in doubles. In addition, Josh's 17 extra-base hits over the month were seventh on the Junior Circuit and his 11 multi-hit games contributed to his 56 multi-hit games on the season, the third-most in Oakland history behind Mark Kotsay (57 in 2004) and Miguel Tejada (also 57 in 2002). He had a 28-game on-base string snapped on September 24th, the longest by an Athletic in five years, in which he batted .379 with 11 doubles, one triple, six homers, 20 RBI, 26 runs scored and 17 walks.
Among his highlights for the month, the three-year veteran doubled, homered and drove in three runs to lead the A's past their A.L. West-rival Texas Rangers, 11-4, on September 4th in Arlington. Two days later, the Pensacola, Florida native went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, two RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base as Oakland edged the Houston Astros, 7-5, at Minute Maid Park. Donaldson's fourth swipe of the season came in the sixth inning as he took third base before coming around to score the go-ahead run on an RBI-groundout. Against the Rangers on September 13th, the Auburn University product doubled, homered, drove in three and scored twice as Oakland edged Texas, 9-8, at O.co Coliseum. The three RBI marked the sixth time this season that the 48th overall selection in the 2007 Draft (by the Chicago Cubs) plated at least three runs. Donaldson put together a three-game stretch with multiple hits from September 19th-21st, all of which came in the first three tilts of a four-game sweep over the Minnesota Twins where the slugger batted .438 (7-for-16) with two doubles, one homer, three RBI and four runs scored during the series.
Others receiving votes included David Ortiz (.287, 6 HR, 21 RBI) of the Boston Red Sox; Coco Crisp (.274, 7 HR, 19 RBI) and Yoenis Cespedes (.314, 6 HR, 19 RBI) of the Athletics; Adam Lind (.318, 7 HR, 20 RBI) of the Toronto Blue Jays; Jose Altuve (.373, 9 2B, 10 RBI) of the Astros; Robinson Cano (.340, 13 2B, 18 RBI) of the New York Yankees; Alex Rios (.294, 5 HR, 18 RBI) of the Texas Rangers; Alex Avila (.348, 2 HR, 8 RBI) of the Detroit Tigers; Michael Brantley (.363, 2 HR, 14 RBI) of the Cleveland Indians; and Salvador Perez (.333, 3 HR, 17 RBI) of the Kansas City Royals.
The Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month, Josh Donaldson, will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for his accomplishment.
