CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Left-hander Joe Savery was claimed on outright waivers Monday by the A's.
The Phillies designated him for assignment Sunday to make room on the 40-man roster for A.J. Burnett.
The Phillies selected Savery in the first round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. He went a combined 3-2 with a 4.15 ERA in 41 appearances over the past three seasons.
Savery had little chance to make the team with left-handers Antonio Bastardo and Jake Diekman near locks to make the Phillies bullpen. Left-hander Jeremy Horst also had moved ahead of him on the depth chart.
Pettibone gets treatment on sore right shoulder
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Phillies right-hander Jonathan Pettibone received a cortisone injection into his right shoulder Monday.
He said he has felt soreness in the shoulder his past couple of bullpen sessions.
The Phillies said Pettibone will stop throwing for five days before attempting to throw again Saturday. No MRI has been scheduled.
"We'll see how he bounces back," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said.
Pettibone finished last season on the disabled list because of shoulder inflammation, so this is worth following. It could become an issue because Cole Hamels said he expects to miss the beginning of the season following discomfort in his left shoulder. Hamels' absence would leave Cliff Lee, A.J. Burnett, Kyle Kendrick and Roberto Hernandez in the top four spots of the rotation. The fifth spot would be a competition among Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, Ethan Martin, Sean O'Sullivan, Jeff Manship and others, if Pettibone cannot compete.
"I look at this as a setback, so odds are he can be a little bit behind," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said.
Sandberg also mentioned right-hander B.J. Rosenberg could be stretched out to start, if needed. He has started in the past.
Stiff competition awaits for Phillies' bullpen
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- It is too early to say much about how the Phillies bullpen might look Opening Day.
But everybody knows closer Jonathan Papelbon is a lock. Left-handers Antonio Bastardo and Jake Diekman also are safe bets. And whenever Mike Adams is healthy -- he is recovering from right shoulder surgery -- he also will be in the 'pen.
There are a host of candidates for what could be just a few spots. Right-hander Brad Lincoln is out of options, which is worth noting. If there is a tie between two players for a job, the player with options is often sent to Triple-A to open the season.
"It's early in the spring for me to really comment on that," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "I like to leave that a little bit open-ended. The players will dictate that in a lot of ways. It's a little bit too early."
Burnett 'real good' in first bullpen session with Phillies
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Phillies had a recovery day Monday at Carpenter Complex, which meant pitchers did not throw any bullpen sessions.
Well, none except A.J. Burnett. He joined the team Sunday after signing a one-year, $16 million deal, so he got started.
"Very good, very good," Phillies pitching coach Bob McClure said. "On both sides of the plate, down in the zone, free and easy. The ball had life to it. He looked real good."
