Baltimore's Roberts wins Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week Award
Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts has been named Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending August 15.
Bank of America, the official bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect the bank's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.
In seven games last week, Roberts led the AL in batting average (.531), runs scored (10) and doubles (8) and tied for the league lead with 25 total bases. He went 17-for-32, posting a .781 slugging percentage, a .571 on-base percentage and four RBIs. Roberts currently has a streak of doubling in seven consecutive games. He had six multi-hit games as the O's posted a 5-2 record for the week.
Other candidates for this week's award included fellow Oriole Melvin Mora (.310, 3 HR, 11 RBI); Boston's Jason Varitek (.522, 10 RBI); Carlos Lee (.379, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 25 TB) of the Chicago White Sox; Cleveland's Ben Broussard (.450, 3 HR, 11 RBI); Detroit's Nook Logan (.500, 2 RBI); Oakland's Erubiel Durazo (.500, 2 RBI); and Bernie Williams (.357, 3 HR, 8 RBI) of the New York Yankees.
Pitchers on this week's ballot were Pedro Martinez (1-0, six-hit shutout) of the Red Sox; Rich Harden (2-0, 2.13 ERA) of the Athletics; Seattle's Gil Meche (2-0, 2.40 ERA); Ryan Drese (2-0, 1.26 ERA) of Texas; and Toronto's Josh Towers (2-0, 2.63 ERA).
