Versatile veteran Figgins signs Minor League deal

MIAMI -- The Marlins are continuing to add players with something to prove, with the latest being the versatile Chone Figgins, who on Friday signed a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.

Figgins, 35, spent the past three seasons with the Mariners. An option at third base and second base, Figgins also plays the outfield, making him a candidate to win a super utility spot.

Figgins is a .277 career hitter, but he is coming off two rough years in Seattle. In 2012, he batted .181 in 66 games, and in '11, he finished at .188 in 81 games.

Miami on Friday also outrighted outfielder Bryan Petersen to Triple-A New Orleans. Petersen also will be in Spring Training with the Marlins.

Miami has 74 players scheduled to participate in Spring Training, which begins with the first workout for pitchers and catchers on Tuesday at the Roger Dean Stadium complex in Jupiter, Fla.

Figgins is a switch-hitter and a speedster who has 337 career stolen bases. He broke in with the Angels in 2002, and in '07, he batted .330 while adding 41 stolen bases. In '05, Figgins swiped 62.
